Traffic Calming Links

Update 2006.10.04 - new discussion starting again: 2006

TRAFFIC CALMING: Greenway and biking issues on roadway- concern was expressed about the new stopsigns at 27th and west river parkway where the greenway traffic is now mixing with the traffic flow. Traffic Calming is needed- time to look at this issue again. The E & T committee met a week ago at Brackett park and covered this topic- with planning for next month to get feedback from elected officials. Concern is cars are NOT sharing the road with bicycles- they push bikers off the road into the curb at the stopsign as the cars cue up at the rush hours. Ideally the bikes and cars need to mix at the 15-25 mph range.. maybe one way routes for bikers doing road training? southbound on the east side , and north bound on the mpls west side of the river?

Two schools just over the Lake Street bridge are very active with saferoutes to schools; St. Mark's and Randolph Heights school.  Minneapolis has a similar program. Both cities are supporting these programs

Summer 2002

A new "speed wagon" has been appearing along the parkway- and drivers who suddenly see it really seem to slow down as their actual speed appears on the large readout.- especially when it turns RED over 33 MPH

Driving back from downtown along the parkway at rush hour made me realize the true effectiveness of the both kinds of speed bumps used in the test area: the true speed "bumps" really brought the traffic stream down to 15 MPH, and once one car did it, all the cars behind too were forced to slow down. The longer and smoother "speed tables" worked very well too: bringing traffic stream down to 20-25 MPH to within the legal posted speed limit. This seems to be ideal to address the high density of the rush hour AM and PM traffic.

Can anyone comment on this regarding increasing "road rage" in those rush hour drivers? or do you find slowing down can also slow down the pressure of the day and allow some relaxation to begin as you make your way home?

Also the MON-FRI closing of the connection from HWY 55 at 54th to the roundabout at Minnehaha park seems to to lessened the more extreme traffic pressure along the parkway.

One change I have seem since the crosswalk law education events that happened in the last few years- people now will stop and let pedestrians actually get across West River Parkway to the walking and biking paths. Still its usually only on one side of the parkway- beware of the other direction of traffic - as they often seem to ignore the courtesy demonstrated by the car that yields. Let me know what you observe.
